HOT FAIR

Heart O’ Texas Fair & Rodeo: Where Central Texas Comes Alive in October

Every October, the Extraco Events Center in Waco pulses with energy, noise, food smells, and the hum of excitement. The Heart O’ Texas Fair & Rodeo (sometimes called the HOT Fair) has become more than a local event. It’s a yearly tradition, weaving together agriculture, performance, competition, and pure fun.

Here’s a look at what makes it special and why you might want to pencil it into your calendar.

A Bit of History & Identity

  • The fair began in 1953, picking up the mantle of regional expositions like the old Texas Cotton Palace. Waco History
  • Its name – “Heart O’ Texas” – came from a nationwide naming contest. A Mrs. John Cousins of McGregor, Texas, won with that entry.
  • Over time, it’s grown in scale and ambition. In 1974, the PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) named it one of its top rodeos.
  • The fair also runs a scholarship program (since 1991) to support youth.
  • The venue itself, formerly called the Heart O’ Texas complex, is now the Extraco Events Center, seating up to ~9,000 for concerts and rodeo events.

When & Where

  • It typically runs 11 days, during the second week of October.
  • In 2025, the dates are October 2-12.
  • The location: Extraco Events Center, 4601 Bosque Blvd, Waco, Texas.
